A colorful watercolor by Birgitta Vereecke, created during her journey through Suriname. The work depicts an exuberant tropical flowering plant, probably Faja Lobi (Ixora), painted in vibrant yellow, green, blue, and reddish-orange tones.

Why this artwork stands out

  • Inspired by Suriname and Birgitta’s journey through the country in 2013.
  • Powerful use of color with contrasting tropical tones.
  • Spontaneous style between realism and impressionism, characteristic of her work.
  • Part of a travel story centered on nature, people, and culture.
  • Created by LGBTQ+ artist Birgitta Vereecke, who studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.

Faja Lobi from Suriname

During a month-long journey through Suriname, Birgitta Vereecke was inspired by the people, nature, and colorful surroundings she encountered along the way.

Among other places, she visited Paramaribo during Keti Koti and continued toward the interior. Along the way, she created watercolors of animals, plants, fruits, and other scenes that caught her attention.

This work places the abundance of tropical flowers at the center. The yellow flowers and green leaves are surrounded by striking blue and warm reddish-orange areas of color. Birgitta keeps the forms recognizable while developing them freely and expressively.

The flowers depicted strongly resemble Ixora, known in Suriname as Faja Lobi. Ixora has distinctive flower clusters, usually with four petals, and also occurs in yellow and orange.
